Identifing badges

Post by Jeroen » 08 Dec 2020 19:55

Can someone help me with identifying the badges on this soldiers uniform. Is he Polish? What kind of rank did he have? What is the badge on his jacket and on his cap? I think he is a second lieutenant, but I'm not entirely sure.

Hi Jeroen

I am no expert on badges, so would bow readily to any corrections from better-informed folk. IMHO this chap is a lieutenant of military aviation 1936-39. The cap badge is the Aviation Personnel version of the national emblem (pre-war there was no separate air force). The badge on his tunic is an aviation specialist badge which I don't immediately recognise. Best guess is that it is an observer's badge but I might be able to have a better stab at it if you could magnify this portion without losing contrast.

Bingo. I was toying with the idea, but this enlargement confirms it. I am 90% sure it's a balloon observers badge. If you can manage to enlarge the first photo, it might even reveal whether it is class 1 or 2.

Thanks Waleed, that's the fish. I don't think it had anything to do with the navy - the seller might have assumed it did because of the anchor motif. I could be wrong though.

Thanks! I did found his name on a list of the 1 Batalion Balonowy (the 1st Balloon Battalion) and this badge confirms that.
