First of all, the IRA is Irish Republican Army isn't it? I wouldn't want to get that wrong
This goes along with my other thread
What if the Germans gave lots of weapons and stuff to the IRA and had Britain tied up in Ireland. What would happen if they invaded then? Would it have been easier for the Geramsn because the British were elsewhere?
Regards,
Zachary

Ireland was a neutral country not allied or at war with Germany or England and I dont think the Germans would have enough weapons or a way of transportation to get them over anyway.
But it would be interesting if they did.....creating another front for England but the U.S. if this is after 1941 would have probably smashed them and it might even create moral problems for them seeing back then there fathers or mothers could have been Irish with all the imagrents etc...
But these are all just "what ifs" so we just use our imaginations with fact

The IRA of the war years wasn't a major force at this time and though it would be angry itch the IRA woudln't have caused any great problem or divergence of resources to Ireland.
There have been other what if's concerning the Irish angle earlier in the What If forum

It's been disclosed that Germany was attempting to do just this. Germany sent agents to Ireland to try and come into contact with the Ira. Some weapons were delivered but I don't know how much. Ireland was a republic for about 18 years at the outbreak of WW2 and England had Northern Ireland. The Irish government at the time was trying to eradicate the Ira and wasn't a strong force. With regards to the transportation of the weapons, some accounts from the time say that they were delivered to the Irish coast via german U-boats. Churchill even considered invading Ireland so that Germany wouldn't have a foothold so near to Britain.

I would just like to say, the IRA is not really the Irish army, they are a cowardly bunch of terrorist who only real success is blowing up innocent people. Any support the Germans gave the IRA would have brought the British forces down even harder in the area. Every fire fight thaere has been between British forces had had one result, dead IRA members.

Why should it turn into a Brit slagging match? Terrorism is terrorism, even if the terrorists are Western European.
I'm part Irish and I can't support the bombing of innocents when there are legal means at hand.

I hope because I'm from Ireland that you think I support the IRA, I DON'T support or admire them in any way. I was just posting some information I saw in a documentary.

The IRA was a complete shambles in the 1930's and 40's because they had no sympathy from the indigenous folk who were heartily sick of the whole thing (parallels today I'm sure). The germans got a fellow in to make contact with the IRA i believe his name was Goetz and he said it was an appalling mess and not worth Germany's efforts or attentions.
The Irish Govt would have crushed any IRA terrorist threat mercilessly and though Ireland was neutral we must all remember that tens of thousands of Irish men fought in the British army and when British Airmen came down over Ireland they were shipped discreetly back to England but that Luftwaffe airmen of which there were many came down over Ireland they were interned in the Curragh Camp until War's end.

Doesnt anyone remember Eoin O'Duffy and the Blueshirts? O'Duffy started a Fascist movement in Ireland before Oswald Mosley created the British Union of Fascists in england. So it wasnt for a lack of trying, he had very close ties with fascist italy and the IRA. it just never had the following of his National Corporate Party come to be. just like William Dudley Pelley and his silvershirts in america, and Sir Mosley's BUF, they failed.
