Prussian King Frederick William IV accepts the "crown from the gutter" in 1848-1849

Post by Futurist » 01 Jul 2020 21:40

What if Prussian King Frederick William IV would have swallowed his scruples and accepted the "crown from the gutter" in 1848-1849, believing that achieving German unification under Prussian rule was more important than taking a moral stand against revolutionaries? The logic would be that the revolutionaries could always be taken care of later after his power over all of Germany would have been sufficiently consolidated.

Anyway, in such a scenario, German unification occurs slightly over 20 years earlier than it occurred in real life. In turn, this raises the question: What would the effects of an early German unification in 1848-1849 have been both on developments within Germany and on developments abroad?

Any thoughts on this?

BTW, the Frankfurt Parliament is the entity that actually made this offer to the Prussian King back in 1848-1849:

Can you please flesh this out so it conforms to the guidelines laid down by Andy H for what constitutes a suitable What If scenario?

By it’s very definition a “What If” isn’t a clean-cut issue that has rigid Black & White boundaries, rather a large expanse of Grey. However this Grey still needs to have some sort of context.

The What If’s need to be a plausible variation on actual military/political events occurring up to the end of 1985 or viable alternatives in their conception. This is a vital pre-requisite to any What If thread, if they do not meet this requirement they will locked or removed.

Remember before posting, check using the Search facility that your proposed question hasn’t been discussed before, if it has then; add your opinion to that existing thread. This results in concise and informative threads, rather than disjointed and fractured ones.

When you post the thread, don’t just ask the question but give us the benefit of your viewpoint and information to back up your argument, as this helps to put the question into context.

By abiding by these simple rules the What If area of the Forum won’t descend into the type of environment that saw the demise of the Poll Section. So please no stupid, nonsense or offensive threads, and if in doubt about whether your proposed Thread is a viable one-then just contact either Marcus or one of the Moderators.

Remember it is you the potential poster, on whose success or failure this part of the Forum rests on.

Thank you for posting the above. This sub-forum used to be full of excellent ATL proposals and intelligent discussion.
Of late it has declined in quality. Often the topics are bordering on puerile, and some of the discussions have become combative in nature.

I am imploring the membership to put some thought and research into their ATL, to make sure it is well defined and at least remotely possible. And let's return an element of decorum to the replies.

Please....
